About the Speakers
Deborah Bowen, FACHE, CAE
Deborah J. Bowen, FACHE, CAE, is president and CEO of the American College of Healthcare Executives, an international professional society of more than 48,000 healthcare executives who lead hospitals, healthcare systems and other healthcare organizations. With comprehensive programs in credentialing, education, career counseling, publications and research, ACHE works toward its goal of being the preeminent professional society for leaders dedicated to improving health.
Ms. Bowen is board certified in healthcare management and a Fellow of ACHE and the American Society of Association Executives. She currently serves on the board of the Institute for Diversity and Health Equity, chairs the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award Board of Overseers, and is president-designate of the International Hospital Federation Governing Council. Ms. Bowen has also held several leadership positions including chairing the boards of the Association Forum of Chicagoland and the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education.
Since becoming president and CEO of ACHE in 2013, Ms. Bowen has been recognized by Modern Healthcare as one of the Top 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare and one of the Top 25 Women in Healthcare.
She received a master’s degree in business administration from Loyola University Chicago and a master’s degree in science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Illinois State University, Normal, and completed the Executive Program in Healthcare Management at the Ohio State University.
James Paulsen, Ph.D.
Jim is Chief Investment Strategist and a Portfolio Manager at The Leuthold Group, LLC. He is a member of the investment committee, author of market and economic commentary, and works with the Leuthold investment team in serving institutional, financial advisor, and investment-professional clients. His long-running newsletter, now titled Paulsen’s Perspective, is published and distributed alongside The Leuthold Group’s premier monthly research product, Perception for the Professional.
Paulsen has been an investment industry professional since 1983, most recently as Chief Investment Strategist at Wells Capital Management where he worked for 20 years. Prior to that, Jim was the senior managing director and Chief Investment Strategist for Investors Management Group in Des Moines, Iowa. He also served as president of SCI Capital Management in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. For more than 30 years, Jim has published commentary examining economic and market trends. He is nationally recognized for his views on the economy, frequently appears on CNBC and Bloomberg TV, and is invited to speaking engagements across the country. He was named a top economic forecaster by Business Week, and Money Magazine called his newsletter one of “101 Things Every Investor Should Know.” Jim earned a bachelor’s degree and Doctoral Degree in Economics from Iowa State University.

Sheila Smith, CTP
Sheila Smith is an Advisor to Gordon Brothers following her fifteen year career at Deloitte as Restructuring Service Line Leader for the Americas Region and the US beforehand. She has participated in hundreds of bankruptcy, restructuring, financial consulting, and §363 sell-side advisory engagements. She is considered a leading authority in the restructuring marketplace and has been recognized by numerous professional organizations including TMA.
Sheila began her professional career as a special education teacher and continues to leverage that experience with her interest in training insolvency professionals.
